"Whales "

Do you have a passion? Something that enthralls you? Inspires you? Amazes you?

I do. Whales. Dolphins. Orcas.

Whales.

Quite simply the most amazing, awe inspiring, graceful creatures on the planet. That's what I think when I look at whales. More importantly, I look upon them with wonder. And wonder is a good thing.

So I wonder.

What does life feel like for a whale? We have seen many photographs and paintings of whales leaping from the water. I wonder...why?

What are they thinking about? What does it feel like to them, breaking free from the support and dark comfort of the ocean and springing forth into what must feel like nothingness? Is it an attempt to escape? A longing for adventure; to touch the great blue sky they know so little about.?

Are they dancing on the edge? Chancing the unknown with all the power their awesome bodies can generate?

Could it simply be fun? A way to pass the time with a playful freedom from knowing the oceans are theirs to roam and explore.

Maybe it's exercise? A way to stay in survival condition or a challenge, pushing them to and past their own physical limits?

Or maybe, just maybe, it's joy. A leap of joy into the sky of a world in which they live, crashing back into the oceans they love. Cherishing life and all its twists and turns and opportunities and challenges. A dance across the sky, reaching and falling and celebrating all there is and was and will be. A leap for joy for being alive!

Maybe the whales have something to teach us, something to share. Maybe we should listen.
